A May 2017 Harvard Business Review article ("Your Brain Can Only Take So Much Focus") showed the only way to operate your brain in a healthy manner is to "toggle" (Flow) between two thought processes. Not only is this the only way to avoid moments where we lose self-control (including addictive behavior), this process was identified as "the essence of leadership".
Another way to look at Flow is when you have more energy doing an activity and time seems to fly. For example, Thanksgiving dinner with the family is going to be eight hours. It can feel like an hour or it can feel like twenty hours...but it is only going to be eight hours. How long it feels is up to you.

Everyone gets these chemicals released by wiring their brain according to one of four thought processes. However, only one of these thought processes is indefinitely sustainable. The other three will end up in addiction and/or destruction.
Joy is chemicals being released by the unconscious brain regardless of your circumstances. Some people describe this as being "generally happy" because they are looking at the feeling in absence of their circumstances.
